Background on Tesla and India

India is the world’s third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases and has pledged to decarbonize its economy, including a goal of net-zero emissions by 2070. Add in an increasingly affluent shopper base, and India becomes a tantalizing market for EVs.

Previous Impasse

Tesla has been actively pushing for reduction in import taxes before making a large investment in India. New Delhi cut the import duty on EVs in March for companies that build locally and invest at least 41.5 billion rupees ($500 million) on a local factory.

Plans for a visit: In April last year, Elon Musk had plans to visit India for a meeting with PM Narendra Modi which fueled speculation regarding Tesla's investments in India, like setting up a manufacturing plant. But Musk delayed the trip to deal with critical matters at Tesla, including job cuts and vehicle recalls in the United States.
